Position Summary:
SUNY Ulster County Community College, a two-year branch of the State University of New York located ninety miles north of New York City in the Catskill Mountains, is currently accepting applications for an Adjunct Instructor for Public Speaking.Under the general supervision of the Program Coordinator, the adjunct instructor will provide instruction, lectures and assignments relating to Public Speaking and Communication in accordance with course descriptions, outlines, class schedules, and the Governing Board policy; evaluate progress of students concerning educational matters, and perform other instructional related duties as assigned. Candidates should meet the minimum job requirements as specified below and be willing to teach in a variety of formats (classroom, online, hybrid). Candidates who are currently working in the field are highly desirable.
Applicants need to be able to instruct the course in an in-person format. Seeking instructors to teach two sections of Public Speaking:
1. Monday, Wednesday, Friday - 10:55 am – 11:50 am
2. Monday, Wednesday, Friday - 1:05 pm - 2:00 pm
Both sections are face-to-face on the Stone Ridge, NY campus.
Classes begin on August 25th, 2025 and end December 19th, 2025.
Course Catalog Description
Students gain practical experience in speaking situations, group discussion, and informative and persuasive presentations. Emphasis is on confidence-building through extemporaneous delivery and through audiovisual resources.The public speaking course is designed to develop the ability to effectively present a variety of speech types. Exercises in voice production and diction and informal presentations will develop confidence and fluidity in public speaking. Through lectures, class discussions, projects and assigned reading, students will become familiar with important theories of communication. Research, preparation, and presentation of several formal speeches will allow the student to demonstrate proficiency in communicating complex ideas clearly and effectively.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Meet each scheduled class and teach or conduct learning exercises for the entire period.
- Contact the appropriate division chair or administrator in advance to make arrangements for unavoidable absences.
- Provide each student at the beginning of the course with written information about the course, to include a full description of the grading system and how the student will be evaluated.
- Accurately keep required class records on attendance, withdrawal, and grading.
- Submit when due, all necessary reports such as attendance and grade reports, roll books, and class information sheets, and certify their accuracy.
- Comply with all institutional policies, procedures, and deadlines.
- Give careful attention to all departmental and administrative communications by checking your SUNY Ulster email frequently.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in a related field or equivalent experience
- Demonstrated commitment to active learning and innovative teaching Computer/Design Program proficiency
- Strong interest in teaching, mentoring, and working with community college students
- Effective interpersonal, communication, and technology skills
And
- Commitment to community college goals and objectives of providing quality programs and services for culturally, socio-economically, ethnically, and academically diverse students and students with disabilities; personal qualities to work effectively and with sensitivity in a multicultural environment; awareness of and commitment to the needs of non-traditional and/or re-entry students with diverse abilities and interests.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Actively working in a desired field of study.
- Evidence of successful teaching at the college or university level.
- Familiarity with the BrightSpace Learning Management System.
- An instructor who engages the students, conveys the traditional materials in a dynamic and captivating format and incorporates the applied arts into their curriculum
Salary:
$1049.00 per contact hour.Application Process:
