Position Summary:
SUNY Ulster County Community College, a two-year branch of the State University of New York located ninety miles north of New York City in the Catskill Mountains, is currently accepting applications for a Professional and Career Advisor.The Professional & Career Advisor is responsible for the full range of general advising responsibilities as well as the coordination of administrative aspects for special student populations as assigned. In addition, the Academic & Career Advisor will serve as a campus resource for career exploration, planning and programming.
The Professional & Career Advisor will be located in the college’s one stop student navigation center, SNAC, and provide as needed support and collaboration to this initiative. This position will also be required to work on-site at other SUNY Ulster campuses, including local prisons.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Serve as primary professional advisor to students in the college’s associate degree program at the Shawangunk Correctional Facility. This will require working at both the Stone Ridge campus and the Shawangunk location.
- The position will serve as the main point of contact with Hudson Link personnel, the College’s 501-C3 partner in the program, and with New York Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) personnel to ensure optimal functioning and continuous quality improvement of the program.
- Assist students in completing appropriate forms and documents, including the FAFSA and those required by Student Accounts.
- Ensure that students are properly registered for classes each academic term.
- Work with appropriate persons at partner academic institutions to ensure seamless transfer of students into bachelor’s programs and support students in academic transfer upon release from the Department of Corrections.
- Ensure that student concerns are promptly shared with appropriate persons on the main college campus.
- Collaborate with others to resolve student academic issues.
- Develop, in consultation with others, schedules for class offerings consistent with college practice and timelines.
- Work with academic affairs to ensure courses are staffed with qualified faculty members.
- Conduct orientations to ensure students and faculty and are familiar with college rules, regulations, requirements and expectations.
- Maintain appropriate records for the program and provide information to others, as requested.
- Act as the SUNY Ulster administrative lead for graduation planning and other events at the Shawangunk facility.
- Participate in meetings and training through the SUNY Office of Higher Education in Prison.
- Participate in and conduct assessments of the program and personnel, as requested.
- Be a resource for career planning and exploration to students at any SUNY Ulster campus location.
- Administer and interpret career assessments to students on all campuses.
- Coordinate/deliver workshops and campus-wide programming on topics like industry trends, career exploration, job market research, resume and cover letter writing.
- Schedule speakers, recruiters and networking events.
- Organize annual campus wide career fair.
- Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
- Associate’s Degree in an appropriate field
- At least 2 years’ experience of customer service and/or administrative support work experience; financial aid, student accounts and/or student records work experience preferred.
- Professional demeanor and ability to work effectively with various constituencies including prospective students, current students, their families, public, faculty, administrators.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills: ability to work well within a team environment and independently.
- Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, Excellent data entry skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple activities.

- Commitment to community college goals and objectives of providing quality programs and services for culturally, socio-economically, ethnically, and academically diverse students and students with disabilities; personal qualities to work effectively and with sensitivity in a multicultural environment; awareness of and commitment to the needs of non-traditional and/or re-entry students with diverse abilities and interests.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in education, social work, or related field.
- Knowledge and experience with Banner.
- Proficient in Spanish
The work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm, some evening and weekend hours are required.
Salary:
An initial starting salary of $52,000 annually with an excellent benefits package. This position is contingent upon adequate funding.Additional Information
